EEND-679 Artifact 1: Formative Assessments

This is a reflection of an assignment I completed in module 3 of Assessing and Improving Student Achievement with Technology. The assignment was to use two forms of assessment. For the assignment, I used the same form of assessment; however, I changed the questioning for each of the three different grade levels I work with.

Currently, with my reading groups, I am using google slides in a manner that is similar to smart notebook with my students. I wanted them to be able to manipulate and type their answers into the slides. In Google Slides, they are able to sort words in the decoding section into their correct categories and sort definitions and picture clues to match the correct vocabulary word. However, we have to complete the slides in the editing mode and I wanted to explore a way for the students to manipulate the slides in “present” mode.

With Earth Day approaching and having students who would benefit from a review of being respectful, I used the book “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein. I went about setting up the lesson very similar to how I set up my guided reading lessons except I used the add-on “peardeck” in google. This way the students can respond to each question on each slide while it is in “present” mode.

I really liked the slide choices available in peardeck; however, the amount of slides are limited. There are different slides to choose from for beginning, middle, and end of the presentation. You are not able to upload your lesson to google classroom like you would a google doc or slide. Instead, you have to give the students a code to enter into peardeck in order to view the slides.

When I first assigned the lesson, I had control of what slides they could view. They did not like this. Later, I found out how to give students control of the slides to work at their pace instead of working at the pace of the slower student. This they liked better.

There are two aspects of peardeck that I did not care for. First, is that you are restricted to which slides you are able to use when you do not upgrade. The second, is that since you are not yet able to link to google classroom, it does not list which student submitted which response for the questions. I found this out when I went to grade a class. Luckily, I was able to prompt the students in the other two classes to list their names at the top of each response.

In conjunction with this assignment, I used Goformative to create an assessment in order to test the students comprehension of the text. I truly enjoyed using Goformative and plan on using it more for assessing students.
