Below is a narrative describing my experience writing and assessing a collaborative task using Schoology as the platform. I am learning about collaborative web tools in a cohort I am participating in to gain an endorsement in Educational Technology.
Schoology is a Learning Management System that my school district is utilizing and it is still very new.
Prior to this assignment, I thought of it as a type of social media where teacher can post lessons that worked wonderfully. Also, to share ideas and ask questions of other teachers within the district. Through this assignment I was able to learn that Schoology has many beneficial capabilities for teachers and students.
My experience with schoology is mainly to access the pacing guide and assessments for math. I work with special education students and push into their general education classrooms, it is because of this that my Schoology screen is very different from classroom teachers.
I liked that I was able to create a folder in which all the assignments were located. I also liked that everything is easy to find and I did not have to navigate between multiple screens to post the assignments.
There were challenges encountered during this assignment. The first was that I had to be added to a classroom. I am grateful for being able to troubleshoot this with my classmates and instructor. I was added to another teacher’s classroom and complete the assignment. The second challenge lied in how to post the folder with the assignment and rubric. In order to make this a collaborative assignment, a discussion had to be opened in order for the students to be able to comment on each others summary. I did not know this and am grateful to those whom I relied on in order to gain this information.
Admittedly, I am weary to using Schoology in the future because of the limitations I am encountering with not being able to create courses for the students I work with. Although, I will still push buttons and make mistakes as I continue to learn how to use this Web 2.0 tool.
