This is a narrative describing my experience creating a Project Based Learning (PBL) Lesson. Within this class (EEND 678- Effective Technology Integration into Lessons and Curriculum) I am learning how to incorporate the technology tools into the lessons I am teaching. PBL allows the students to learn hands-on within a group as the teacher facilitates and assists and conferences with groups throughout the duration of the assignment. I am participating in this cohort in to gain an endorsement in Educational Technology.
Creating a Project Based Learning lesson was part of module 4. The lesson is to create an enclosure in a zoo for an animal. The enclosure has to incorporate aspects of the animals natural habitat. Prior to this assignment, I had heard about PBL with the discussions and previous resources. There was a template provided; however, I tweaked it to incorporate the different weeks, check-ins, and student discovery time. The template was completed using word. PBL requires planning several weeks in advance. I enjoyed planning this unit because it can be connected to different curriculums and get the students involved and allow them to take ownership of their learning. Also, I enjoyed finding the different types of technology the students can utilize in order to complete the assignment.
The challenges were to make sure the students have access to the websites with the districts filters. Another challenge was finding a topic that the students would find interesting. As well as giving enough time to introduce the assignment and giving the students enough time to complete the task, taking into consideration internet availability outside of school.
PBL is a great way for students to learn and reinforce different lessons learned cross-curricular.
